Apples: Nature’s Anti-Aging Fruit

I love the concept of eating for beauty, a mindset I’ve embraced since 2011. Over the years, I’ve created numerous recipes that reflect this philosophy. One ingredient that stands out is apples, especially when they’re in season and at their best. Apples are a simple yet powerful addition to a beauty-focused diet, offering numerous skin benefits. Here’s how they can enhance your beauty regimen:

  • Vitamin C for Collagen Production: Apples are rich in vitamin C, essential for collagen production. Collagen helps maintain skin firmness and elasticity, reducing fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Antioxidant Powerhouse: Packed with antioxidants, apples protect the skin from oxidative stress and environmental damage. This helps combat signs of aging, such as dullness and age spots, by neutralizing harmful free radicals.
  • Malic Acid for Gentle Exfoliation: The malic acid in apples acts as a natural exfoliant, gently removing dead skin cells and promoting a brighter, more even complexion. This enhances the skin’s natural glow and improves its texture.

Adding apples to your diet, whether enjoyed fresh or in recipes like my apple crisp, enhances skin health and vitality. Furthermore, using topical apple-based skincare products delivers these benefits directly to the skin. Embracing the natural goodness of apples offers a holistic beauty approach that nourishes from the inside out.

Ingredients

  • 4 large apples, peeled, cored, and sliced

  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats

  • 1/2 cup all purpose flour

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • 1/4 cup butter, melted

Directions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Toss apple slices with lemon juice and spread them in a baking dish.
  • In a bowl, mix brown sugar, oats, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Stir in melted butter until crumbly.
  • Sprinkle the oat mixture over the apples.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and apples are tender.
  • Serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • If you’re looking for a substitute for all-purpose flour in your recipe, particularly for something like an apple crisp, here are a few options that can work well:

  • Almond Flour: This is a great gluten-free option that adds a nutty flavor to your dish. It can be used in a 1:1 ratio with all-purpose flour.
Oat Flour: You can make oat flour by grinding rolled oats in a blender or food processor until they reach a flour-like consistency. This will complement the rolled oats already in the recipe.
Coconut Flour: This is another gluten-free option, but it absorbs more moisture, so you’ll need to use less. Start with about 1/4 cup of coconut flour and possibly increase the liquid or butter slightly.
Whole Wheat Flour: If you’re looking for a slightly healthier option and don’t need to be gluten-free, whole wheat flour can be used in a 1:1 ratio. It will give a denser texture and a slightly nuttier flavor.
Gluten-Free Baking Mix: If you have a gluten-free baking mix on hand, it can usually be substituted in a 1:1 ratio for all-purpose flour.

  • Each of these alternatives will slightly change the texture and flavor of your apple crisp, but they can all work well depending on your dietary needs and preferences. Enjoy your baking!
